Ten years! Yes, this month we at Last Word are celebrating a milestone in the life of Portfolio Adviser, the eminent publication for investment professionals.
During the past decade, our magazine and website have kept wealth and fund managers on their toes with insightful features, revealing profile interviews, and breaking news and analysis.
There have been plenty of stories to get our teeth into, of course, not least regulatory upheaval and the biggest global recession in living memory.
That’s not to say we always get it right. “Talk of recession is just that – talk,” we proclaimed in our October 2008 issue. “Investors are basing their views on misplaced fear and negative perceptions of what is happening in economies and markets rather than fact.” Ahem...
Many names have come and gone in that time, though the ethos, goals and concerns of wealth managers have remained consistent.
Beating benchmarks is one thing but the need for diversification and downside protection have become even more important, while what was once considered ‘unconventional’ monetary policy now defines our times.
In a record low interest rate environment, the big question is how long central banks can keep the threats at bay. As one commentator memorably puts it in this month’s Investment Strategies, there will one day be consequences that are “going to make 1929 look like a tea party”.
Still, there is reason to be positive for the decade ahead as increased professionalism, greater transparency, technological expansion and globalisation means investment choice is greater than ever. You’ll need some guidance along the way and that is where we come in – hopefully for another 10 years to come.
